AGT's FInal 4; Because Ventriloquists have stolen my smile
I'm Mike Rose and THIS is America's got Talent's subversive underbelly, telling the truth, when the judges absolutely have given up on judging.
First of all, a few comments on the show and formatics:
- Call me a goofball, but I really dug the fact that they called out the finalists as the show went on, and kept everyone hanging til' the end for the last 2 weeks. It adds to the suspense and as in last night's show's case, exposes the remaining contestants for the buttholes that they are. Watching Sidecrap and Julienne Irwin, not being their usual phony smiling selves was rewarding in a sick kind of way for me.
- I really felt, with the exception of Julienne Irwin, that the right 4 folks advanced, although really none of the eliminated acts, The Glamazons, Jason Pritchett, Robert Hatcher and Sideswipe were any better than her, she immediately turned on her phony "you really like me" smile, perfected by Melinda Doolittle last year..and I remembered why I didn't want her to advance.
- Robert Hatcher is a classy guy, and I think he's got a nice voice, but honestly, he feels like he is going to get signed, but I'm not on that train. He will get some initial interest from someone, but he's not polished enough to make any money doing this.
- Jason Pritchett could have a future as a country teen idol type, but I think his voice is way too weak to have any kind of impact as a career country performer.
- Don't get me started on the Glamazons, because I never saw anything in them, there wasn't a standout singer in the group, their harmonies were crap and their choreography was hard broke, maybe they can get a plus sized pussycat dolls thing going on, but short of that, I wouldn't pay 5 cents to see them.
- What exactly could Sideswipe do besides work at a vegas casino as one of those faux street acts? I really hated the attitude that these guys put out there, they really didn't even belong in the top 24, much less the finals.
- It was announced that the finalists would sing 1 song that was a judges choice(right, they are going to learn a new song in a week) and one song of their choice in the finals...my bullcrap meter is pegged.
- Holy Crap, NBC loaded up on Commercials for this show....feh.
What I liked on the show:
- Cas Haley did what he had to do with "I can't help (falling in love with you)", the pseudo-reggae thing is his gimmick and it wasn't bad...he seems like an honest guy and it wouldn't kill me to see him win this thing, although, he should never speak unless he has something prepared, because when Jerry threw him the mic, he didn't say anything.
- Terry Fator's version of Roy Orbison's "crying" with his his turtle puppet "Schpilcus" was very good, but again, in no way at any time, was he funny at all. The weird thing was, halfway through his act, they panned out to Piers and he was laughing like he had just finished watching Rush Hour 3....what's up with that? This guy really has nothing funny going on, he's taking the inspirational tack that we all love in the reality talent show bidness and I personally don't know how anyone would pay 5 cents to see a ventriloquist that is inspirational, unless he doesn't have any arms or something.
What was okay:
- Butterscotch sang a version of "what's going on" and did a decent job, but as time goes on, the reality of things is that she has an extremely average singing voice and a wonky tooth, that bugs the living tar out of me. This song kind of exposed her, but it wasn't as bad as either Julienne Irwin songs.
- Cas Haley's "Sir Duke" was kind of a mess for me, but he was better than most anyone else on the show, so I guess it was okay, anyway, the judges are pimping him and Fator the strongest, so outside of some strangeness going on with the voting, Cas should be strong enough to win. Is he interesting enough to get signed? Yeah, but I don't know if he's a money guy enough to get major label interest. Man, I should be an A&R guy...
- I guess I'll put Julienne Irwin's version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" here, because it didn't totally offend my senses, other than seeing the kid come out of the ceiling on a half moon, which was really, incredibly cliche' and the fact that she sang that song, which has been used on every talent show since Star Search (Sam Harris where are you?), really kind of bugged me, but oh well...It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen.
-Terry Fator had his cowboy puppet friend "Meshuggah" sing "Friends in Low Places" and it was okay, but either Terry was having problems with the mix, or he was struggling with the vocal range and dealing with the fact that he couldn't move his mouth, because the vocals were too low. The Judges put him over, and Piers told him he could win this (duh.), but it really was kind of just okay. Why doesn't this guy tell jokes?
What wasn't very good at all:
- Butterscotch tried to do an all beatbox version of "Dance to the music" and it really was kind of tired and not too good. The judges liked it, but they didn't give anyone a negative review last night. I really haven't liked her hybrid beatbox/singing thing and it's mostly because she's competant at both, but is really not super awesome at either and this is supposed to be the pinnacle...right? I just don't feel her whole act and someone will probably sign her, but I don't know what she's doing that's any more original than what Blake Lewis did on last seasons crappy American Idol.
- Oh holy hell, Julienne Irwin bombed with "what hurts the most" and I will tell you what hurt the most, it was the fact that vocally, she isn't able to get the job done yet. If AGT gets Bianca Ryaned again, I am going to start a revolt. Someone sane, please stop the madness.
Who will win this....
I think it's a toss up between Cas Haley and Terry Fator and I would pick Cas if I actually was voting (I'm Not)
What do you guys think?
