Missing: Casey & Finnegan (and a major part of my childhood!)

Missing: Casey & Finnegan

I went to a performance at the Roy Thompson Hall in Toronto today, but I had yet to pick up my tickets. According to RTH policy, tickets not picked up an hour before the performance, may not be guaranteed. Therefore, once I'd had lunch downtown and picked up my tickets, I had a little over two hours to kill.

The suggestion was made to head over the CBC building and visit their museum. Upon entering the main building -- a phrase which hear means the headquarters for Canada's official network -- we were greeted by the following: Nothing. There wasn't a single person on duty at the desk, nor any security, hell, we didn't even see a janitor on duty. Not only that, despite the fact the sign said the museum is open from 12-4 on Saturdays, the museum doors were securely locked.

Eventually, we gave up and just sat in the main lobby -- watching the CBC on the really comfy couches. At one point, I suggested we steal the couches, since no one was around to stop us. In fact, we probably would have only been stopped if we'd tried to get on the GO train carrying large pieces of upholstered furniture. To fill the time (since we'd already done our patriotic duty by effectively doubling the CBC's viewing audience at 1:30 on a Saturday), I wrote a snarky note to the museum about how they heard about my super secret plan to steal Casey and Finnegan, Mr. Dressup's puppets. I assured them that a locked door would not stop my inner 6 year-old from being reunited with them. I slipped the note under the door.

Finally, after being in the CBC for 50 minutes, one man did come by -- I think the lone security guard on duty. We asked to be let in to the museum, which he did. I picked up my note and put it in the visitor's suggestion box and left a second note on top of the box saying "Open me."

My trip to museum revealed what I take to be an issue of national security -- Casey and Finnegan are not in the CBC museum. All the puppets who replaced Casey and Finnegan were there, but the originals were nowhere to be found. Where would these puppets be if not in the CBC museum? Where else could they possibly do any good? Does the CBC not realize that the lack of Casey & Finnegan could traumatize several generations of working professionals? How could one be a child in Canada between 1967 and the late 80's without knowing Casey & Finnegan?

More importantly, why has no one looked into this? Why has no one called out the army to search for these important pieces of Canadian history?

I'm doing my utmost as a citizen and putting the entire country on notice.

Casey & Finnegan are missing! Be on the alert and find them!
