Is there a real rule about wearing white after Labor Day? If so, why?

Maybe in the 50's or 60's it was frowned upon but i don't think there is any real fashion rule to people wearing white or white shoes after labor day. I can only imagine the looks on peoples faces back in the 60 if they were to see a white party after labor day. It's completely silly and I still don't understand why they make references to it in some commercials that I see on TV as if its something that recently became ok to do. Come to think of it I wonder what color shoes tennis players wore back in those days after labor day? Well it's summer and white's the color of choice for me, even my designer sunglasses have white frames to match my white j12 chanel.
