BBC America: SkinsSubmitted by Jasmine D on Mon, 2008-08-18 15:38. Last Login: Wed Jan 7 2009 0:47 GMT |
I've already asked this question on my blog, but I'll ask the forums: did anyone catch "Skins" last night on BBC America?
What did you think? Is it just another trashy soap in the vein of "Gossip Girl", or is there a more profound message underneath all the drinking and drugging and shagging? Did you find the closed captioning useful? Is the slang making you go "WTF"?

I can see the show working to top itself in coming seasons, though it certainly seems a lot more effortless than other shows about young folks dabbling in same albeit with some kind of consequence to immediately follow.
Like, I love Degrassi, but who on that show has sex and doesn't get into some kind of trouble? Liberty gets knocked up the first time she does it with the dear departed J.T. and has a baby to give up for adoption. Manny gets knocked up and has an abortion. Marco may or may not be gay and immediately gets bashed on the way to a hockey game. Can't these kids "misbehave" without suffering dire consequences?
And I hope Anwar's character gets fleshed out more, too. Wonder if Jal will be of interest in a future episode? And what about Tony's sister?

If you wanted to start a spoiler thread, I could answer all your questions. :D

I've already seen the first
I've already seen the first two series and really love the show, although I didn't watch the BBC America premiere because I didn't want to see what would be cut or edited. The show tries a little too hard to be edgy and storylines tend to be rushed (especially in the second series) but overall it's awesome and I adore pretty much all of the characters except Anwar, although my favorites are Sid and Cassie.
